Forward Deployed Engineer vs. solutions engineer

A solutions engineer knows the customer and helps them adopt a product, but rarely owns the build. A Forward Deployed Engineer owns the full arc: finds the problem inside the customer's operation, designs the system, builds and deploys it against their real tools, and is accountable for the measured result.

Where the roles overlap

Forward Deployed Engineers and solutions engineers both sit across from the customer, need discovery skills and technical credibility, and explain systems in business terms. That overlap is why solutions and sales engineers already have a big piece of the FDE skill set.

Where they differ

The roles diverge on three points: who owns the build, what they are measured on, and how deep they go after launch.

  • Ownership of the build. A solutions engineer demos, configures, and scopes. An FDE writes and ships the production system.
  • Accountability. An FDE is measured on whether the deployed system moved the customer's number. Deal closure is someone else's metric.
  • Depth after launch. FDEs own evals, monitoring, fallbacks, and the next version after the system is live.

The gap from each direction

Software engineers have the technical depth and have never sat across from the customer. Solutions and sales engineers know the customer and have never owned the build. Almost nobody has done both in an AI-native setting.

For a solutions engineer moving into FDE work, the gap is skill 3: building, evaluating, and deploying AI systems into production. For a software engineer, it's skills 1 and 2: understanding the business and turning that into architecture. The full software-engineer comparison is on Forward Deployed Engineer vs. software engineer.

Questions people ask

Can a solutions engineer become a Forward Deployed Engineer?

Yes. Solutions engineers already have customer discovery and technical credibility. The usual gap is owning the build: designing, coding, evaluating, and deploying an AI system into production. One real deployment, owned end to end and measured, is the most direct way to close it.

Is a Forward Deployed Engineer more technical than a solutions engineer?

An FDE builds and deploys the production system and owns its evaluation and reliability after launch. A solutions engineer demos, configures, and scopes. Both roles require strong customer skills.

Which role is right for me?

If you enjoy the customer conversation and want to own what gets built, measured, and maintained afterward, the FDE role fits. If you prefer helping customers adopt and configure an existing product across many accounts, solutions engineering is the better fit.

Ready to own the build?

FDE Dispatch is built for engineers closing exactly this gap: twelve weeks, one-to-one, with a live deployment for a real business.
