What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?
A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) takes an AI system out of the lab and into a customer's actual operation. Strip away the title and the role comes down to three skills: understand the business, turn that understanding into architecture, and build and deploy the system so it keeps working after the demo.
Skill 1: Understand the business
Understanding the business means walking into an industry you have never worked in, figuring out how it makes money, who owns the problem, who feels the pain, who signs off, and talking in the metrics the business already uses.
This is discovery. A process lives in people's heads as an undocumented decision tree. The FDE's job is to extract it.
Skill 2: Turn understanding into architecture
Turning understanding into architecture means translating a messy human problem into a system design that improves the current process and names the number that proves it.
Choose the stack that ships. The harder call is what should be automated and what should stay with a person.
Skill 3: Build and deploy
Build and deploy means running one continuous cycle in AI: build the fix, capture it as an eval, ship only tested changes, then monitor reality and turn every failure into a better version.
If you're a working software engineer or data scientist, you already have most of skill 3. The gap is skills 1 and 2. Both are human judgment calls.
See how FDE Dispatch trains these three skills.
What an FDE does day to day
Day to day, a Forward Deployed Engineer sits with one customer, scopes a buildable first slice, builds against the tools the business already runs, proves the change with evaluations, and reports in the metrics the business already tracks.
- Sits with a customer and finds the problem that costs them time or money.
- Scopes it into a buildable first slice, with explicit cuts and tradeoffs.
- Builds against real data and the tools the business already runs: phones, inboxes, forms, CRMs.
- Proves it works with evaluations and a measured before-and-after.
- Reports the result in the metrics the business already tracks.

Questions people ask
Is a Forward Deployed Engineer the same as a software engineer?
No. A product engineer builds one capability for many users. A Forward Deployed Engineer works with one customer at a time, finds the problem inside their operation, designs a system around it, deploys it into their real tools, and reports the outcome in business terms. The build is only part of the job.
Do you need a PhD to become a Forward Deployed Engineer?
No. The role rewards deployed AI work and the ability to run a conversation with a non-technical stakeholder. Degrees don't come up much. Most working software engineers and data scientists already have the build skills; the gap is discovery and turning a business problem into an architecture.
Why is the FDE role hard to automate?
The core of the FDE role is judgment: understanding a business, deciding what is worth building, and deciding what should and shouldn't be automated. Those are human calls made with a specific customer, which is why the role grows as AI spreads.
