Most Forward Deployed Engineer postings mention travel. Across 725 live FDE postings from 121 employers (October 24, 2026), 430 (59.3%) mention travel and 313 (43.2%) state a percentage; among those that state one, the median upper bound is 30% and the median lower bound is 25%. Share of FDE postings that mention travel
430 of 725 postings (59.3%) from 58 employers mention travel. That is the same 59.3% published on the salary page. A mention is a keyword match in the posting text, so read it as "mentions travel," not as a hard requirement. On the 563 engineer-title postings in the skills requirements index, re-fetched October 25, 2026, the share is 58.8%.
What percentages postings state
313 postings at 30 employers state a travel percentage; 121 of those 313 are ranges. The median stated upper bound is 30% and the median lower bound is 25%. The most common posted strings are 20% (85 postings, 75 of them Databricks), 25% (47), 50% (38), and 25 – 75% (30, all Palantir).
Bands below use the stated upper bound and exclude Accenture's 12 postings that say "0 to 100%". That string is a boilerplate range covering any travel amount; keeping its 100% upper bound in the band table would inflate the over-50% count from 41 to 53.
| Stated upper-bound band | Postings | Share of 301 excluding Accenture |
|---|---|---|
| 10% or less | 3 | 1.0% |
| 11-25% | 139 | 46.2% |
| 26-50% | 118 | 39.2% |
| Over 50% | 41 | 13.6% |
Databricks (88 stated) and Palantir (67 stated) dominate the stated set. Excluding both leaves 158 postings at 28 employers with a median upper bound of 45%.
Engineers, deployment strategists, and managers
Stated travel runs higher on deployment strategist and management titles than on engineer titles. Among postings that state a percentage, the median upper bound is 25% for engineers (242 stated of 568), 75% for deployment strategists (49 stated of 86), and 50% for FDE management titles (22 stated of 71).
| Role family | Postings | Mention travel | State a percentage | Median stated upper bound |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineer | 568 | 335 | 242 | 25% |
| Deployment strategist | 86 | 63 | 49 | 75% |
| Management | 71 | 32 | 22 | 50% |
Remote-listed roles still mention travel
A remote label on the posting does not remove travel language. 129 of 191 remote-listed postings (67.5%) mention travel, against 301 of 534 non-remote postings (56.4%). The 191 figure is the salary-page remote field; the locations page uses a wider remote read of 199 postings (27.4%).
Travel language on a posting points at customer-site discovery and deployment. FDE Dispatch trains you for the customer-facing rounds that test that work.
How travel varies by employer
Thirty employers state a travel percentage in this snapshot. The table lists the employers with the most stating postings and the most common value as posted. The strings come from public job boards. FDE Dispatch claims no affiliation with the employers listed.
| Employer | Stating postings | Most common stated value (as posted) |
|---|---|---|
| Databricks | 88 | 20% (75 of 88) |
| Palantir | 67 | 25 – 75% (30 of 67) |
| Salesforce | 35 | 25% (28 of 35) |
| OpenAI | 26 | 50% (24 of 26) |
| Accenture | 12 | 0 to 100% (12 of 12; boilerplate range) |
| Cognition | 10 | 25–50% (9 of 10) |
| Cohere | 9 | 20–40% (6 of 9; plus 20-40% on 3) |
| LangChain | 9 | 40% (4) and 20% (4) |
| Shield AI | 8 | 30% (4) and 50% (4) |
| DevRev | 7 | 80% (4 of 7) |
| Snowflake | 7 | 25% (4 of 7) |
| Anthropic | 6 | 25-50% (5 of 6) |
Counting each of the 30 stating employers once, the median of employer median upper bounds is 40%.
What travel means in the FDE role
In Forward Deployed Engineer work, travel is time at the customer's site to run discovery, ship a deployment into their environment, and run workshops with the operators who will own the system. The same customer-site presence shows up in FDE interview rounds that test discovery, messy debugging on someone else's stack, and deployment retrospectives. Office location on a posting is the home base; customer-site time sits on top of it. City and remote shares for this snapshot are on Forward Deployed Engineer jobs by location.
How to read a posting's travel line
- Separate mention from percentage. Many postings mention travel without stating a number. A keyword match means the text uses travel language; it does not fix a schedule.
- Read ranges as bounds. A string such as 25-50% or 25 – 75% names a band. Ask the hiring team which end of the band matches the seat you are applying for.
- Watch boilerplate ceilings. Accenture's "0 to 100%" covers any amount. Treat that as a flag to ask, not as evidence that the role is full-time travel.
- Hold remote and travel together. A remote-listed posting can still name travel. Read both fields before you decide the seat is desk-only.
- Check the role family. Deployment strategist and management titles in this snapshot state higher upper bounds than engineer titles when a percentage appears.
Method and data
Population: 725 FDE, deployment strategist and FDE management postings from 121 employers on public Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workday boards, pulled October 24, 2026. Same population as the salary, job titles and locations pages. Recruiting agencies and duplicates removed.
Travel mentioned = keyword match for travel language in the posting text. Travel percentage stated = the raw percentage string as posted. Upper and lower bounds are parsed from that string; bands use the upper bound. Employer-once figures take one median upper bound per stating employer.
Limits: these are open postings on one pull date. Headcount is outside this index. Keyword matching is approximate. Employers that post only on LinkedIn, Indeed or other applicant systems are missing.
