Do you need a degree to be a forward deployed engineer?
Published
Most FDE postings do not mention a degree. Across 651 engineer and deployment-strategist posting texts from the October 24, 2026 public-board snapshot, 467 postings (71.7%) say nothing about education after hand review. Of the 184 that do, 110 require a degree outright, 64 accept equivalent experience, and 10 only prefer one. Computer science is the field named most often. These figures are what postings said on the October 25 and 28, 2026 text pulls. Employers can change requirements. This page is not hiring advice.
Headline figures from the hand review
Denominator: 566 engineer-title texts pulled October 25, 2026 and 85 deployment-strategist texts pulled October 28, 2026 (651 combined) from the October 24, 2026 public-board snapshot. Keyword seed (degree / bachelor / master / PhD / BS / MS / BA / diploma / or equivalent / university / undergraduate) hit 260 postings. After hand classification:
| Measure | Combined (651) | Engineer (566) | Deployment strategist (85) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyword matches | 260 (39.9%) | 201 | 59 |
| Required | 110 | 96 | 14 |
| Required or equivalent | 64 | 61 | 3 |
| Preferred | 10 | 10 | 0 |
| Noise-only keyword matches | 76 | 34 | 42 |
| Silent on education | 467 (71.7%) | No required / required-or-equivalent / preferred label | |
One stance per posting. If a posting requires a bachelor's and prefers a master's, stance is the bachelor rule and the master's is recorded as advanced_preferred (16 postings). Silence uses the three stance labels only: 651 minus 184 non-noise equals 467.
What levels and fields employers name
Of the 184 non-noise postings, 100 name a bachelor's as the minimum that satisfies the education line, 10 require a master's or graduate degree (or list graduate as the bar with an experience alternative), and 74 say "degree" without naming bachelor, master, or PhD. When a line lists Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD as alternatives, the count uses bachelor as the minimum that satisfies and stores the highest credential named separately.
| Level (minimum that satisfies) | Postings |
|---|---|
| Bachelor | 100 |
| Unspecified degree | 74 |
| Master / graduate | 10 |
Field mentions among those 184 postings (a posting can name more than one field):
| Field | Postings naming it |
|---|---|
| Computer science | 142 |
| Technical / related field | 99 |
| Engineering | 87 |
| Other STEM | 28 |
| Math | 23 |
| Data science | 19 |
| Physics | 17 |
| Statistics | 7 |
| Business / MBA | 2 |
| Other (for example law / JD) | 1 |
Required vs equivalent vs preferred
Required means the posting states a degree as a requirement with no experience alternative on the education line. Salesforce's "You have a degree in Computer Science or a related field," Cognition's "Degree in a STEM field," and Shield AI bachelor lines use that pattern.
Required or equivalent means a degree appears under requirements, and the same line (or the next line) accepts equivalent experience, practical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Anthropic's minimum-education line, Chalk's "Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent," Databricks' graduate degree or equivalent practical experience, and Runpod's bachelor or equivalent professional experience sit here.
Preferred means the degree is nice-to-have, preferred, bonus, or only under a Preferred / Nice to Have heading. Glean lists a technical degree under Nice to Have. Anduril places the B.S. line under Preferred Qualifications. Broadcom writes "Bachelor's degree preferred" with experience in lieu of a degree.
Required-or-equivalent and preferred wording leaves room for candidates without a degree who can show the experience the posting names. Required wording without an alternative is the strictest education bar in this corpus.
Engineer vs deployment strategist
Engineer-title texts carry more real degree stances: 167 of 566 (29.5%) after hand review, versus 17 of 85 deployment-strategist texts (20.0%). Strategist keyword matches are noisier (42 of 59 are noise only), often from Salesforce and Databricks boilerplate that hits "or equivalent" without an education line. When strategist postings do state a stance, most are required (14) or required-or-equivalent (3); none in this pull are preferred-only.
US-located vs non-US-located seats
Location flags come from the requirements-index location fields on each matched posting (us_location: true, false, mixed, or unspecified).
| Stance | US-located | Non-US-located | Mixed | Unspecified |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Required | 40 | 63 | 3 | 4 |
| Required or equivalent | 23 | 35 | 2 | 4 |
| Preferred | 9 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Non-US-located seats outnumber US-located seats in both required (63 vs 40) and required-or-equivalent (35 vs 23). Preferred wording in this pull is almost entirely US-located (9 of 10). Salesforce accounts for 29 of the 63 non-US required postings.
Employers with the strictest education lines

Among advanced-degree lines, Databricks lists a graduate degree or equivalent practical experience on six engineer seats. Scale AI Staff Full-Stack seats ask for a Masters or PhD or equivalent deep industry experience. Sixteen postings require a bachelor's (or equivalent) and separately prefer a master's, graduate degree, MBA, or advanced technical degree.
Of the 184 postings that state an education rule, 74 accept equivalent experience or only prefer a degree. FDE Dispatch is for working engineers: each participant adds a live AI deployment for a real business to the experience they already have, coached one-to-one.

What the keyword seed also hits
Of the 260 keyword matches, 76 are noise only: the text matches a seed term, but the posting does not state a real education requirement. Common noise in this pull:
- Idiom hits such as "to a degree," "high degree of," or "strong degree of user empathy" (37 noise-only postings), including many Palantir seats.
- Non-education keyword residue after filters (21), including university names in company boilerplate.
- "Or equivalent" tied to clearances, tooling, consulting tenure, or middleware instead of education (11).
- MS as Microsoft SQL Server (2 MongoDB seats), BS as slang in "no-BS" (1), Mastery-level role language, pay-transparency lines that list education as a pay factor, internship enrollment constraints, and one posting that says a degree does not matter.
Practical next steps without a CS degree
Read the education line before you self-reject. Sixty-four postings in this corpus accept equivalent experience. Ten only prefer a degree. Most equivalent-experience lines do not define the experience, so lead with evidence of the work the posting describes, such as shipped production systems and customer-facing delivery. The skills guide shows what else those postings name. Shape that evidence on the page with the resume guide, and use the entry-level and how to become an FDE guides for early-career paths. Method and data
Population: 566 engineer-title posting texts pulled October 25, 2026 and 85 deployment-strategist posting texts pulled October 28, 2026 from the October 24, 2026 public-board FDE snapshot (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workday). Management titles from that snapshot are not in this corpus. Keyword seed: degree, bachelor, master, PhD, BS, MS, BA, diploma, or equivalent, university, undergraduate. Every one of the 260 matches was hand-classified into required, required_or_equivalent, preferred, or noise.
Limits: keyword matching is approximate; hand review is what produces the published counts. Postings close; check the url before relying on a row. Employers that post only on LinkedIn, Indeed, or other applicant systems are missing. Evidence links were live-checked November 4, 2026 in Pacific Time.

Questions people ask
Do you need a degree to be a forward deployed engineer?
Most FDE postings in this corpus say nothing about education. Across 651 engineer and deployment-strategist posting texts, 467 postings (71.7%) are silent after hand review. Of the 184 that state a degree stance, 110 require a degree with no experience alternative, 64 accept equivalent experience, and 10 only prefer a degree. Silence on a posting is not a refusal.
How many FDE postings mention degrees or education?
A keyword seed for degree, bachelor, master, PhD, BS, MS, BA, diploma, or equivalent, university, and undergraduate matched 260 of 651 postings (39.9%). After hand classification, 76 of those matches were noise only. 184 postings carried a real degree stance (required, required-or-equivalent, or preferred).
What degree fields do FDE employers name?
Among the 184 non-noise postings, computer science appears most often (142 postings), then related or technical field wording (99), engineering (87), other STEM (28), math (23), data science (19), physics (17), and statistics (7). Field counts can sum above 184 because one posting can name several fields.
Do deployment strategist postings ask for degrees the same way?
Of 85 deployment-strategist texts, 17 state a non-noise degree stance (14 required, 3 required-or-equivalent, 0 preferred). Of 566 engineer-title texts, 167 state a non-noise stance (96 required, 61 required-or-equivalent, 10 preferred). Strategist keyword matches are noisier: 42 of 59 strategist matches were noise only.
What should a candidate without a CS degree do?
Read the education line carefully. Sixty-four postings in this corpus accept equivalent experience. Ten only prefer a degree. Target seats that say equivalent experience or preferred, and put shipped production work and customer-facing delivery evidence first on the resume and in interviews. Employers can change requirements; these figures are what postings said on the October 25 and 28, 2026 text pulls.
